Temple details
- About this temple
District Ujjain records it among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva and describes Mahakala as the city's distinctive presiding deity, historically linked with the calculation of Indian time. The same government page describes the lingam as traditionally understood as swayambhu, and notes that the image is dakshinamurti, facing south — a feature it says is unique among the twelve Jyotirlingas. Omkareshwar Shiva is consecrated in the sanctum above the Mahakal shrine, with images of Ganesh, Parvati, and Karttikeya around the sanctum and Nandi to the south. Nagchandreshwar, on the third storey, is open for darshan on Nagpanchami. On Mahashivaratri, worship continues through the night. In Shravan–Bhado, District Ujjain records Shree Mahakaleshwar Savari, when the deity is taken out on Mondays.
