Temple details
- About this temple
Dating back to at least the 6th century CE, with its present form largely built and expanded by the Pandya dynasty, Vijayanagara Empire, and Madurai Nayak rulers, the temple spreads across 5.7 hectares and features 14 towering gopurams (gateway towers), the tallest rising 52 metres, adorned with thousands of vibrantly painted sculptures of deities, animals, and mythological characters. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi — an avatar of Parvati — and her divine consort Sundareswarar (Lord Shiva), whose celestial marriage is celebrated annually as the grand Chithirai Festival, drawing millions of devotees. A unique nightly ritual called 'Alankara' sees Lord Sundareswarar ceremonially carried to Goddess Meenakshi's chamber, symbolising their eternal union. The Thousand Pillar Hall, the Sacred Golden Lotus Tank, and the Temple Art Museum make this a pilgrimage site of unparalleled cultural and spiritual richness. Awarded 'Best Swachh Iconic Place' in 2017 by the Government of India.
