- About this temple
Known as the 'Eternal Shrine,' it holds a place of supreme importance in Hindu scripture, finding mention in ancient texts like the Rigveda and the Shiva Purana. The temple has a turbulent but resilient history, having been rebuilt numerous times after invasions and destruction — a testament to the unshakeable devotion of its followers. The present magnificent structure was consecrated on May 11, 1951 by the then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Built in the Chalukya style of architecture, the temple's shikhara (spire) rises 150 feet above the sea, with its flag changed three times daily. The Jyotirlinga within is believed to be self-manifested and one of immense cosmic power. Pilgrims from across India and the world come to seek blessings for peace, liberation, and spiritual well-being. The site is also a Triveni Sangam — confluence of three sacred rivers: Kapila, Hiran, and the mythical Saraswati. The nightly light and sound show narrated in the baritone of Amitabh Bachchan brilliantly recounts the temple's history.
